I appreciate originality and uniqueness of a vision. “How does it look?” and “How shall we know?” are the most important topics for me. For example, it is usually impossible to see from end to end in the house because it is hampered by walls and doors. But it can be made possible if we make small holes. Even if the space is tiny, being able to see through from end to end will make it unique. It is also fascinating that its dimension changes every time I walk through. But that is very difficult to describe in a drawing. It is an experience that the customer can only enjoy by living in the house. There are many L-shapes and U-shapes in my designs. These are just the result of my persistence to look at one’s house from the inside of one’s house.
Some people say that architects who cannot make stairs well are a failure. Stairs clearly change a person’s visual line up and down in their movement, and they have a profound effect on design in general. In my personal case, I try to place the stairs at the lightest place in the house. By doing so, people can be spared the inconvenience of moving between the 1st and 2nd floors. The stairs which are only used as a tool to move between floors are usually designed as a background so as to not block the space. I design it on purpose in an appealing place to change the simple act of moving up and down to a pleasant activity as well as elevating its utility value, including the surrounding space. The stairs which play an important role are to be in a high point in space and be in harmony with the surroundings.
In the future, what I want to improve is the groundwork and the outside wall. I would like to change the groundwork in my own way, even though the best way is considered to be the traditional one. I believe there can be new and more elaborately designed groundwork, the space between the ground and the house. I am able to show the possibility of more sophisticated groundwork and architectural ideas through how to use that space.
There are many things that everyone considers common knowledge. By taking them back to the drawing board we can take them to a new level. And from there, there are infinite possibilities.
