European architecture has a stone culture as its basis. It has strong associations with its historical background that needed continuous self-protection from foreign enemies. For people whose life is fraught with danger, a box shape made of stone is the perfect fortress and also acts as a home by making a hole in the roof. On the other hand, Japan did not have many crises whereby they could be overrun by other countries, as was the case in Europe. Consequently they were able to cultivate a unique architectural style. We can say that Japanese architecture is timber culture. Compared with European architecture, it has more openings and a lot of wide space. The space can be opened and closed freely, depending on the seasons, and the structure can be adjusted as desired. Additionally, the structure has many interfaces with the outside and it has a wide range of possibilities.
There is the Fusuma door, the paper door and gardens. People develop their personality from the way they live their lives. I consider this to be the individuality of the Japanese. While the development of interior accessories are necessary to maintain people’s personality in European architecture which has only walls and windows, Japanese building structure is required to be simple. It places high value on harmony and involving the environment into people’s lifestyles. This is related to Zen, which enhances the dimensions of objects by leaving out as much as possible. I would like to incorporate Japanese beauty, long cultivated in Japanese history, into Japanese architecture as one of its guardians.
I have been influenced by Katsura Imperial Villa and other structures in Kyoto. I visited “Machiya” many times from when I was a student, but its intrinsic meaning is impossible to be mastered, even if I spent all my life in pursuit of it. Katsura Imperial Villa, built at the beginning of the Edo period and used as a home, looks motley; however, if you look closely, it is trimmed as much as possible and has an extremely sensitive design. I really love it because it is sometimes narrow, sometimes wide, then thick, low, lacking coherence, but it feels comfortable and everything fits naturally. All Japanese people have the personality and the unique sense of measurement, and they have now become my basis of design.
(Humorous of the architecture – really didn’t understand what this was all about, Hisataka, so was unable to make much sense. Must be a translation problem because humorous = funny)
